As you can see by the definition below, social media is a pretty general term.  Social Networking is how you connect it all together.  By building a network of specifically targeted users you maximize your visibility.  You create partnerships with others to help spread the word about your business.  You save advertising money by streamlining your network, cutting through the clutter and defining your audience in ways that never existed before.
